No Snow Train to the French Alps this winter

Rail Europe has decided not to run the popular Snow Train service this winter.

The company says that the recession and poor exchange rates has forced them to cancel the service which gave skiers a chance to enjoy 8 days skiing and an overnight sleeper service with a disco carriage!

Not all is lost for skiers who prefer to avoid airports. The Eurostar ski trains will still run from London St Pancras and Ashford direct to Moutiers, Aime le Plagne and Bourg-St-Maurice in the Alps. Eurostar have two services: a Friday overnight service (non-sleeper), and a high speed day service on Saturdays arriving in the Alps in just 7½hrs.

Skiers will need to book early for these services. They are always popular and will be under extra demand with the loss of the Snow Train this winter.

New flights to Lithuania

Lithuanian carrier, Star1 Airlines launched a new service between Vilnius and London Stanstead on Friday. The direct flights will operate 4 times a week.

Star1 is also operating flights to Dublin and Girona (Barcelona), and has plans to expand to other Paris and Milan when they add a second Boeing 737-700 to their fleet later this summer.

Low-cost flights to Asia boosted

Air Asia A330-300 in flightAirAsia X, the low-cost long-haul extension of AirAsia, is now flying daily between London Stansted - Kuala Lumpur. Since its inaugural flight in March, the airline has operated the route five times a week, but passenger demand from both leisure and business passengers has prompted the increased frequency.

Fares to Kuala Lumpur start from £150 in economy and £398 in XL. Once in KL, passengers can then make low-cost connections to over 100 destinations, including Langkawi and Penang from £4 and even Australia from £40.

European high-speed railways are connected up

Yesterday the third and final bit of high-speed rail track in Belgium became operational, linking Paris and Brussels with Cologne.

The new link, running from the brand new 9-track station at Liège to the German border, puts Brussels at the heart of a pan-European high-speed rail network with direct links to London, Paris (&most major French cities), Cologne, Frankfurt, Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Trains will now travel from Brussels to Cologne in 1h 39mins - it used to take them 2h 35mins - and last week's 3h 50mim journey from Paris to Cologne is now reduced to 3h 15mins. Extrapolated, it means passengers from London will be able to reach Cologne in 4h 45mins (changing at Paris).

Thalys trainTwo train companies will compete on the new network. Deutche Bahn's ICE high-speed trains are already using it. Soon they will be joined by Thalys. It's a slightly odd form of competition though as DB are partners in Thalys with SNCF, SNCB (Belgium) and Dutch Railways.

Since January, Thalys has been renovating and upgrading its high-speed trains in preparation for the completion of the network. As well as improved interiors the new service also offers ticketless travel, with emailed confirmation of your reservation and a reminder of your seat number sent by SMS to your mobile 1 hour prior to the train's departure.
