Step out into thin air, 1,353ft above Chicago
The Ledge opened in July on the 103rd floor of Chicago's tallest skyscraper, the Sears* Willis Tower. "The Skydeck has evolved to challenge our visitors’ curiosity," said Randy Stancik, general manager, Skydeck Chicago. "Yeah, that's one way to describe it", we say! The Skydeck on the 103rd floor has been the building's 'visitor centre' since 1974, attracting 1.3 million visitors annually who, from up there, enjoy views of up to 50 miles and four states. Now, The Ledge is a whole new experience, inspired by "hundreds of forehead prints visitors left behind on Skydeck windows every week". Here comes the technical bit: The Ledge, or rather, four 'ledges', are glass boxes cantilevered out from the building. Each box is comprised of three layers of half-inch thick glass laminated into one seamless unit. The low-iron, clear glass is fully tempered for durability. ...um, and is quite strong. * Righteous fury broke out in July when, in return for leasing three floors of the tower, an obsure (in Britain, let alone the USA!) British insurance company was granted naming rights over Chicago's landmark building.
